Albania's defense minister says the army will dispose of all excess arms and ammunition by 2014, with U.S. and NATO help.
Arben Imami says the operation will involve "the least possible danger."
A massive blast at a munitions disposal factory near the capital, Tirana, in 2008 killed 26 people and injured 300. Albania, a former communist country, joined NATO last year, and has about 90,000 tons of excess ammunition stored in old army depots.
The country's authorities are still trying to recover more than half the estimated 550,000 weapons, 839 million rounds of ammunition and 16 million explosive devices looted from army depots during a revolt in 1997.
Imami spoke Wednesday to state TVSH television.
